Brilliant Trout Fishing

With several meandering kilometers of weired river, the fishing at Three Falls is comparable to the best trout fishing in South Africa. Author Andrew Levy in his book "Reflections on a River" described it as follows: "The river has changed in parts over the years. Sandbanks build up where they had not been before, reeds take over in parts that were once open and, from time to time you have to rethink your strategy to accommodate this, but the overall character remains the same. It is one of peace and tranquility."

The farm is punctuated by two valleys, one of which runs down the length of the farm with the farm house on a peninsula between the two rivers. These two valleys drop nearly 200 metres and give the rivers their unique character with runs, riffles and waterfalls. The upper third of the waterway runs through a narrow valley and is more reminiscent of a Scottish burn, while the middle section is a more typically South African scene where the river is wider and deeper – and offset with craggy rocky overhangs and verdant tree ferns. The lower section is more akin to an English trout stream with meadows rolling down to wide banks and slow flowing river pools.

The weirs and river are kept in immaculate condition – with mown paths at regular intervals providing access to the more overgrown sections of the bank thus enhancing the fishing without tampering with the natural beauty of the river itself. The water is crystal clear and one of the rivers has its source on the farm.

A trout hatchery on the farm ensures a consistent quality and size of trout in the river.

Good to know:

  • The river boasts Rainbow Trout and naturally occurring Brown Trout.
  • The average catch is around three pounds and the fish are in excellent condition.
  • Fishing conditions suit both wet and dry flies.
  • Fishing is barbless.
  • Standard trout fishing equipment is required. We recommend a seven-nine foot rod with floating and sinking lines.
  • Waders are not essential but long trousers and calf length boots are recommended – and warm jackets for the early mornings and evenings are advisable.
  • The closest fly-fishing shop is in Dullstroom where local pattern flies and other fishing equipment are available.
  • The fishing is generally catch and release, but there is a bag limit of four fish per stay.
  • Please record all catches. Fishing record sheets can be found in the fishing room.
